Wessex Association of Children’s Anaesthetists
The Wessex Association of Children’s Anaesthetists (WACA) was formed in 1998 at the suggestion of Dr Matthew Wood and Dr Katy Wood and since then there has been an annual half-day scientific meeting that rotated around the region’s hospitals, usually with a guest speaker and a trainee prize section. Hospitals represented ranged from Dorchester in the West to Chichester in the East and from the Isle of Wight in the South to Basingstoke in the North.
When the Royal College of Anaesthetists encouraged networking amongst children’s anaesthetic leads and with the inaugural APA linkman meeting taking place in November 2006, WACA added an annual business forum for the leads from each hospital to the morning before the scientific meeting from 2008. This was organised by John Burden and Debbie Marsh and over the next 8 years provided a well-attended platform for the discussion of problems common to many hospital departments throughout the region, sharing experience and reached consensus about solutions and protocols.
Since 2016 WACA has expanded to include Frimley hospital and we have run an annual consultant’s revalidation all-day meeting every Spring in addition to the Autumn business and scientific meetings.
